Non-monogamy is defined as a form of intimate relationship where both partners have consented to engage in sexual affairs with their different external sexual partners and still maintain the love, loyalty, and affection in their relationship and marriage.

Non-monogamy is never considered as infidelity nor contradictory to the ethics of monogamy because both partners must come to an agreement before having a non-monogamous marriage or a non-monogamous dating or relationship

Forms Of Non-Monogamy Relationship

There’re two forms of non-monogamy namely:

  1. Consensual non-monogamy
  2. Non consensual non Monogamy

Consensual Non-Monogamy

This is a form of a monogamous relationship where both partners have agreed to be involved in a romantic sexual relationship with an outsider and at the same time maintain their love, duties, and responsibilities as partners.

Consensual non-monogamy is also referred to as Ethically non-monogamy

Non Consensual Non-Monogamy

Non-consensual non-monogamy is a form of a non-monogamous romantic relationship where one of the partners is secretly having a romantic affair with another person other than his or her primary partner.

Non-consensual non-monogamy is considered cheating and hence defies the ethics of non-monogamous relationships.

Types Of Consensual Non-Monogamous Relationship

There’re basically three types of consensual non-monogamous relationship which are

  1. Polyamory  Non monogamy
  2. Open non Monogamy
  3. Swing non monogamy

Polyamory Non Monogamy

The word ” Polyamory ” was coined from the combination of the Greek word” Many” and the Latin word “Love”.

Polyamory is a system of relationship where the partners are at liberty to be in more than one romantic relationship at the same time with the full consent of all the partners involved in the relationship.

A polyamorous relationship could also be termed No strings attached form of relationship.

Open Non-Monogamy

Open non-monogamy is synonymous with friends with benefits which entails being in a relationship with someone for the sole purpose of sexual exploration without any love, intimacy, or commitment involved.

Open non-monogamy is a type of relationship where a partner engages in sexual affairs with someone outside his or her relationship and at the same time still has the emotional and romantic attachment with the main partner.

Swing Non-Monogamy

Swing non-monogamy is a type of consensual non-monogamous relationship where two partners in a relationship or marriage have on mutual grounds consented to explore physical intimacy together with an outsider just for fun or for recreation purposes without any emotional or romantic attachment to it.

What is non -monogamy?

A typical example of a swing non-monogamous relationship is a couple having a threesome or foursome together with either of their friends.

A swinger can go for an event say a nightclub and hook up with a strange guy and end up engaging in physical intimacy with the full knowledge of the primary partner.

Polyamory is a system of relationships where the partners are at liberty to be in more than one romantic relationship at the same time with the full consent of all the partners involved in the different relationships.

The primary partner and the external partners must have full knowledge of the fact that they are in a polyamorous relationship so that they would not deviate from the rules guiding such a relationship.
